The Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem is one of the Orders of Chivalry created at the time of the First Crusade. The Order was founded outside the walls of Jerusalem 900 years ago to tend to the crusaders and pilgrims in the Holy Land that were afflicted with leprosy. While leprosy remains one of the key international works of the Order, the Order in Canada has adopted palliative care as its field of work within Canada.
"Palliative Care is a unique form of health care developed to address the needs of those with terminal illness. This specialty focuses on the needs of the patient and the family when a cure for a life-threatening illness such as cancer or AIDS is no longer available.
A primary goal of palliative care is to improve the quality of a person's life as death approaches and to help patients and their families move toward this reality with comfort, reassurance and strength. Palliative Care is not focused on death; it is about specialized care for the living." ( The Institute of Palliative Care, University of Ottawa )
This web site, provided by the Thunder Bay Commandery, Order of Saint Lazarus, is intended to provide information about those services that are available to the terminally ill and their families.
