Thousands Affected by Death, Find Hope, Education and Support at Hospice

The Calgary Commandery is proud of its commitment to the community as reflected in the support of the many programs offered by Hospice Calgary's anticipatory and bereavement services.

Hospice Calgary is a not-for-profit, registered charity that has been sup-porting Calgarians for over 20 years. By supporting Hospice Calgary, the Calgary Commandery helps individuals of all ages cope with the ill-ness of a family member and rebuild their lives following the death of a loved one.

A woman with two young children is diagnosed with terminal breast cancer. A man loses his wife in a tragic car accident. A mother and father are reeling from the suicide of their teenage son. These are just a few examples of people who turn to Hospice Calgary. Each year they provide support, education and hope to thousands of men, women and children from Calgary and surrounding communities whose lives have been altered by death. Last year alone, Hospice Calgary helped over 1,800 individuals.

Through our financial support, the Calgary Commandery directly impacted Hospice Calgary’s ability to provide this support. Our recent $40,000 donation was used to fund program costs including volunteer training, and program supplies for children, teens and adults. In addition, we paid for the meals for the children’s grief group and Living with Cancer Day program. The Calgary Commandery also pro-vided funding for brochures, newsletters and client materials.

No program can operate without a physical location and insurance. In today’s climate, some 'funders' are stepping away from helping charities meet the high cost of rent and insurance. We proudly stepped forward to support Hospice Calgary’s cost of 'doing business,' particularly in a city that is experiencing the tightest rental market in the world.

The Hospice Calgary Community Outreach Centre, where all of the support and counseling programs are located, is funded entirely through public / private donations and other fundraising efforts. Hospice Calgary must raise $1.3 million each year to maintain their current level of services. Since 2000, the Calgary Commandery has contributed over $100,000 helping Hospice Calgary achieve their mission.

We know that we are making a difference in this community by helping Hospice Calgary to support our colleagues, neighbours, friends and loved ones.
