Palliative Care Institutions Benefit From Financial Support,
Home Care Training

The Montreal Commandery provides ongoing financial support to local palliative care institutions, including West Island Palliative Care Residence, Lakeshore General Hospital, Montréal General Hospital, and the Victorian Order of Nurses.

In addition, the Montreal Commandery offers a course for Home Care Volunteers designed and organized by Garrfield du Couturier-Nichol CLJ, MMLJ. Eight individuals followed this five-module program in the fall of 2005.

The purpose of our Home Care Volunteers program is to provide introductory training to volunteers who will give respite to the primary caregiver, so that they may leave the home for a half day to do shopping and other activities not directly related to patient care.

Topics such as changes in the emotional state of persons at the end of life, dealing with the primary caregiver, and dealing with the death of the patient are covered. In our last session, we introduced a module on palliative care of dying children.

The medical care of the patient is left to the medical professionals and the primary caregiver. Qualified professionals in this field present all modules. Many of the sessions involve role-playing to give a practical insight into the problems that the volunteers will face in the home care environment.

Knowing that one of the primary goals of the Order is to support and expand palliative care, the Montreal Commandery proud that the Home Care Volunteers program is truly making a difference in our community.
