A Caregiver's Guide Fills Important Need,
Becomes National Success Story

A handbook about end-of-life care, A Caregiver's Guide was developed in 2000 by the Edmonton Commandery in association with the Palliative Care Association of Alberta, the Alberta Cancer Board and the Edmonton Regional Palliative Care Program.

A Caregiver's Guide assists family caregivers by complementing the guidance and information they receive from palliative care and homecare professionals. Palliative care professionals in the fields of nursing, medicine, social work, pharmacy, nutrition, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and pastoral counselling all contributed to A Caregiver's Guide design, form and content. A team of experienced palliative care professionals and health educators reviewed, compiled and wrote A Caregiver's Guide based on extensive input and review.

Funded entirely by the Edmonton and Calgary Commanderies of the Order of St. Lazarus, more than 20,000 copies of the original work have been distributed at no cost to family caregivers and volunteers via the 11 regional palliative care programs. The Western Ontario Commandery also funded a reprint for hospices and palliative care programs in their area in 2003.

Numerous requests for a revised, national edition of A Caregiver's Guide were received from across Canada. Encouraged by Senator Sharon Carstairs, then Minister with Special Responsibility for Palliative Care, the Order of St. Lazarus in Canada committed to support the publication of a national edition in association with the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association in 2005.

Funding, both raised and contributed by the Order of St. Lazarus, permitted publication of 50,000 copies of A Caregiver's Guide, and 15,000 of the French translation Guide des aidants naturels, to Canadian caregivers via more than 400 hospice palliative care program associated with the CHPCA.

Demonstrating that an important need was being filled by the publication, all copies were soon exhausted and a reprint of 22,000 copies was required in the fall of the same year.

A Caregiver's Guide provides family caregivers with the medical and nursing information they will need to support their loved ones in clear, easily understood language. This also helps them understand the journey upon which their loved one has embarked and to become an effective, informed member of the palliative care team providing essential physical, spiritual, and emotional support.

A Caregiver's Guide is a national project that demonstrates the Order of St. Lazarus' mandate of serving its community.
